Surgical treatment for obesity in Turkey

Let’s have a look at a few procedural types of obesity surgery in Istanbul:

Gastric Sleeve

This the most common surgery to treat obesity in the world. The operation is performed by the closed method called the laparoscopic method. During the gastric sleeve operation, eighty percent of the stomach is removed.

After part of the stomach is taken out, the remaining twenty percent is directly connected to the continuation of the duodenum thus remaining its natural extension. In this way, theoretically, the volume of the stomach was reduced. Through this method, the size of the stomach becomes smaller and the person will only be able to eat according to the volume of his/her stomach.

Since the stomach is small, meals are also small. The person who starts to eat less starts to lose weight with weight control as the capacity of eating decreases and the portions

Gastric Bypass

With this method, both volume limiting and absorption disrupting mechanisms are used together. First, a gastric pouch with a volume of approximately 40-50 ml is created and the foods reaching the small stomach through some intestinal anastomoses bypass a certain intestine section and jump to a part of the intestine closer to the large intestine, and some of it is excreted without being absorbed.

With this method of surgery, 90% of the stomach part is completely disabled remaining what we can call a blind stomach.

Gastric balloon

The gastric balloon procedure is non-surgical which ensures that no incisions will be involved. Instead, the surgeon places inside your body the gastric balloon in the same way you eat food, through your mouth.

The deflated gastric balloon itself lies inside a tiny capsule which is smaller than a normal pill. At the end tip of an extremely thin, long tube that will go into your mouth, the doctor will lay the capsule.

You will be sedated before. After the procedure is finished, you can go home in about 1-2 hours. The procedure itself takes around half an hour.

A candidate for obesity treatment

Who can be a candidate for these procedures?

To perform these procedures, someone with the body mass index (BMI, BMI = Body Mass Index) above 40 that does not respond to exercising and diet, or the BMI (BMI) is above 35 and the patient has type 2 diabetes or hypertension.

Comorbid diseases such as high cholesterol, sleep apnea, weight-related joint deformities, and depression are also on the list of illnesses that can be treated via this type of surgery.
